Wooden coffee scoop (#1)
Wooden coffee scoop (#1)
Sweet little coffee scoop made by my partner Jonny (aka The Grumpy Builder!)
Carved from traditional English hedgerow trees, which are coppiced on our small farm in Cornwall, England.
His carving style is very beautifully simple and rustic. No sandpaper is used to finish the scoops off so you can still see the marks from the axe, knife or crook knife.
Once carved, the spoons are treated with *food-grade linseed oil to protect them. However, I wouldn’t recommend using them as eating utensils or cleaning them in the dishwasher! In fact there’s no real need to wash them at all. Instead we like to allow the oils from our hands and the coffee grounds to build up a rich, deep patina in the wood over time.
Please note: the bowl size of each scoop varies slightly and does not equate to a specific measurement of coffee. To find out how much coffee to use, use the scoop for a few days varying the amount, and the fullness of each scoop until you make your perfect strength cup of coffee. As a general starting point, when I use my scoop at home, I like to make a single cup of black coffee with two giant, heaping scoops of freshly ground coffee. Try this and reduce or increase the amount to suit your coffee beans, brewing style and palate.
*No nut oil has been used in the making of these scoops.
Scoop 1: this scoop still has the bark of the tree on. It’s the largest handled scoop in this batch with a soft, gentle rounded shape.
scoop 2: a more dainty spoon, this one also has the bark left on and has a delicate lightly twisted neck.
Scoop 3: This is a quirky shaped scoop which sits in the hand beautifully. Bark on and has lovely natural patterns showing in the bowl.
Scoop 4: This feels like a sensible coffee scoop! It has quite a straight handle, bark on, and just wants to make you a cracking cup of coffee. No messing!
Scoop 5: No bark on this one, but instead it has a wide, flat base to the handle which makes it lovely to hold in your hand.
Scoop 6: This one has the bark left on the handle, which contains beautiful patterns reminiscent of a mossy rock.
Scoop 7: Small, delicate with a good, deep bowl. No bark on the handle, and it has a beautiful soft, golden colour to the wood.
Scoop 8: Bark on, straight slightly twisted handle with a lovely small but deep bowl for piling high with coffee.
